Inspection of transmission and distribution power lines

Distribution and transmission through overhead power lines ensures the continuous flow of electricity. Maintenance should be carried out regularly to prevent damage to power lines that can lead to power outages and affect the entire society and economy.

Hercules 2 – Mini UAV for inspection of power lines and welding substations.

The Hercules 2 drone offers a safe way to inspect power lines and transmission towers while reducing costs and human risk. Hercules 2 is equipped with a FLIR duo camera. RGB and thermal sensors provide a more precise analysis and perform precise diagnosis of power lines to organise future maintenance and investment plans.

Hercules 2 sensors can detect potential defects and faults such as broken or chipped insulators, check the condition of pylon paint, monitor surrounding vegetation … and thus prevent power outages.

Hercules 10 with Pensar camera – Artificial intelligence assisted power lines inspection.

Autonomous and real-time detection of errors and defects with the Pensar camera with built-in artificial intelligence
Detect, track, recognise and annotate problems and defects with the Pensar camera and increase your inspection efficiency.

Advantages

  • Efficiency: Maximise uptime.
  • Safer: easily access hazardous areas.
  • Multi-tasking: detecting various problems and faults in power line transmission.
  • Avoid power outages

Corona discharge detection

Detect corona effects (corona discharge) quickly and safely.

What is the corona effect?

A corona discharge (also known as the corona effect) is an electrical discharge caused by the ionisation of the air surrounding conductors.

What are the consequences of the corona effect?

Corona discharge produces a purple glow and can cause power loss, crackling noise, radio interference and ozone gas production.

Hercules 10 and Corocam 8 for detection of corona discharges.

Hercules 10 is equipped with the Corocam 8 – UViRCO camera, which can detect and prevent corona discharge on power lines in hard-to-reach areas.

Combined imaging (IR, UV and VIS sensors) allows UV and thermal inspections to be performed simultaneously, saving time, reducing risk and human effort. Co-locating electrical shocks and hot spots allows the maintenance operator to better understand the cause of a fault.

Advantages

  • Efficiency: Maximise uptime.
  • Safer: easily access hazardous areas.
  • Easy access: Identify and prevent faults caused by vegetation.
  • Multi-tasking: The drone can determine wear, detect corona discharges, electrical faults and even assembly errors.

Power line stringing

Drones help to string high-voltage power lines quickly and safely.
With drones, it is possible to connect high-voltage lines from one high-voltage tower to another in a safer, faster and cheaper way than traditional stringing (helicopters, manual stringing). Energy companies can now reduce operational costs and save time by pulling power lines with drones. How it works? The drone loads a very thin, light and ultra-durable cable guide. This cable will be laid on the transmission tower to reach the team on the ground who will install the final cable. This method using professional drones reduces human and material risks, unlike traditional methods such as helicopters or operators climbing high voltage towers. Advantages
  • Avoid human risks
  • Reduction of operational costs
  • Fast installation
(Development in progress)

Mapping of power line networks

Equipped with a Lidar or RGB camera and RTK system, the drone provides high-resolution images for 3D mapping at low cost and safely.

Drone mapping of the electricity grid allows the inspection of thousands of kilometres of power lines to optimise the monitoring of the grid and the maintenance plan.

A regular mapping allows monitoring vegetation, verifying maintenance work and services performed by operators or external companies, and checking the general condition of the power lines.

Advantages

  • Cost reduction
  • Time saving
  • No power cuts
  • Prevents human risk
